Posing At The Lincoln Memorial

There are lots of people at the Lincoln Memorial.  Even on a cool, rainy day.  From all over the world.

  1. Monumental sculpture has a way of doing that; it exists for that very reason. Regardless of the country one visits, heros and gods writ large are worth a snap to show we've been there. For me, as I think of that first time I visited the Lincoln Memorial, it was after having lived in apartheid South Africa in the 1970s.

I can still remember my sense of history, of being overcome, by the promise of it all. Today, it's a bit different as I think of the imperial proportions of the Mall and its monuments to the glory of an unintentional empire. I ponder, and ask how did it go so wrong?

    America hasn't changed; I have.
